The City of Flint Police Department occasionally receives reports of criminal activity that is suspected by the investigator to be a false report. The motivation by people to make a false reports is frequently to cover up other criminal activity that they themselves have been involved in.The individuals making these false reports take valuable investigative time and resources away from legitimate victims. The Flint Police Department will charge individuals determined to be making a false reports with this agency, through the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office. We will highlight some of these prosecutions through this page.

On December 28, 2014, Oscar Banks, a 23 year old male, arrived at Hurley Medical Center with a gunshot wound. Banks reported to officers that he was walking to his vehicle when he was approached by a man who put a gun in his face. Banks reported after a brief struggle, he ran and was shot by the man. The investigation led Detectives to Banks residence where they located blood in several areas of the house, a bullet hole in his floor that traveled into an adjoining apartment and a stolen handgun. Banks was charged with and arraigned for "False Report of a Felony", a felony charge punishable by up to 4 years in prison, a $2,000.00 fine, or both.
