*NEWS RELEASE*
Flint Police Department

On Sunday, May 24, 2015, at approximately 2:20 a.m., law enforcement responded to 1420 W. 12th Street, in the city of Flint for a large gathering that resulted in shots being fired and seven persons being shot. During the subsequent scene investigation, detectives found the location to be littered with alcoholic beverage containers, drug paraphernalia and ammunition casings. Immediately after this event near the intersection of Industrial and Gillespie, a second shooting scene was investigated in front of a closed “after-hours” establishment. These events are indicative of a long standing problem in the City of Flint of late night activities occurring particularly on the weekends, “after-hours”. “After-hours” is frequently used as a term for an establishment that opens, or its primary business is conducted after the normal closing for legitimate bars and nightclubs. These establishments either sell alcohol or allow persons to bring their own alcohol for consumption on the property.
Operating any sort of establishment where alcohol is sold or consumed requires licenses issued by the City of Flint. There are currently NO businesses of this type licensed in the City for operation after 2 a.m. and there are ordinances in effect that make activities of this nature illegal. The Special Operations Division of the City of Flint Police Department has already notified all known “after-hours” establishments of these ordinances.
It is the intent of the City of Flint Police Department to aggressively enforce these ordinances. It should be understood that any person found to be operating or frequenting an “after-hours” establishment is subject to arrest by law enforcement and sentencing by the court.
Citizens with information concerning “after-hours” operations are encouraged to contact the Special Operations Division anonymous tip line at 810-237-6957, CrimeStoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP, or call 911.
